Editor’s note: This poem was written for Afghanistan’s first international football title victory on Sept. 10, 2013 in Nepal where the national men’s team beat India 2-0 to win the South Asian Football Federation championship.
Tonight in Afghanistan
Children and young people smile
Suffering mothers’ prayers are fulfilled
All Afghan people sing the national anthem
All are dressed in one color
The flag of Afghanistan’s victory.
Tonight we all stand together
Moonlight illuminating the dark sky
Moonlight smiling on every person
Tonight every Afghan’s home has happy lighting
Cries of joy from every Afghan girl and woman
Sharing this message of congratulations
This is the meaning of peace.
The football is a symbol
Each time the ball flew on the tournament field
Memories of war and misery were destroyed
The ball became a dove of peace
Flying in Afghanistan’s sky
The tournament field helped us
Forget all the suffering
Afghan children’s kites have football colors
On each kite it will be written: I am crazy about — I love —
The land of the valiant, Afghanistan.
