Little Girl

three children running

Did you see the little girl reaching for her bright future?
She ran fast and tried so hard. She was just beginning.

Could you see how she jumped over the obstacles,
How she watched sharply, like an eagle, to find her way?

Did you see how smart she was, how she bounded over hills?
I saw in her eyes the dreams she wanted to fulfill.

She was swift, ran fast and heroically.
She wanted to reach the stars.

I saw the same little girl, coming down the walk,
Tired and defeated. She wanted to scream and talk.

A lion blocked her way, and she was scared,
Turned back, in despair.

She promises herself now that she will run again,
That she won’t be scared by lions and bad men.

  1. Sudaba, This is a beautiful piece! It brought me joy, then sadness, and then hope. You are strong enough and smart enough to run again! I will be cheering for you…

  2. Je'Taun says:

Wow. This piece was absolutely beautiful. I could feel the little girl change and wanted to yell, “RUN!”.

  3. Dear Sudaba,
Yes, indeed, this piece is wonderful! It pulls you through to the last word and is so powerful because it is so strong in hope. May you all run forward!
    With much respect, Jeannie

  4. “That she won’t be scared by lions and bad men”… what a powerful last line, Sudaba. Makes me stop in my tracks. Brava to you, and brava to all of the girls and women out there, making their way. Your poem is an inspiration. Stacy
