This poem was written for International Women’s Day, March 8, 2014.

An Afghan woman
with lots of wishes,
I see obstacles
before me,
but I have my goals.

How shall I reach them?
Must I fight my own society
who thinks being a daughter is a sin?

I believe I have lots of power,
but my society puts me in a jail,
which they call a home.
They won’t let me go out
to use my skills,
to reach my goals.

But not any more.
I want to move.
Let’s move together,
My Sisters,
and fight for our rights.
Let’s move, not let men
put us in a jail.
Let’s move, My Sisters.
Let’s move.
