My heart is a coward
When it is knocked
My hands shake
My tongue stutters
My face fades away
My heart an empty cage
I have no courage to open its broken door
I lost the key of trust
When my heart is knocked
I sneak under a shell
Close my eyes and
I weep for my heart
I remember how it was young
Happy and open
until you came to occupy
its best space
You owned my heart,
Suddenly, you destroyed my heart
You killed every living cell of my heart
Since then love is in exile
Love is prohibited! Not accepted!
Love is expelled from this fragile cage
Since then, anxiety, sorrow, hatred and fear
Live in me.

Well done, Shafiqa. The details, the voice in each line of the poem… I don’t think you’ll find a reader who will not relate to this poem! You describe an extremely painful situation very well. If the speaker is you, I pray for healing. But I hope you’ll keep writing. Writing can help us heal. Stacy
The emotions in your poem are expressed so powerfully. I don’t know if you write in English or if your poem is translated, but the short lines and the repetitious phrasing give strong voice to your message. Than you for being courageous.
Shafiqua I have read this poem countless times…and it moves me every time.
You owned my heart,
Suddenly, you destroyed my heart
You killed every living cell of my heart
Since then love is in exile
Love is prohibited! Not accepted!
Love is expelled from this fragile cage
Since then, anxiety, sorrow, hatred and fear
Live in me.
Appreciated Shafiqa very nice piece
Shafiqa — Thank you for giving voice to this pain — whether it belongs to you or someone you know — I hope that writing about it has helped to ease some of the sorrow and suffering. There is courage in sharing these words. A beautifully written poem. Nancy
This poem!
“Suddenly, you destroyed my heart
You killed every living cell of my heart
Since then love is in exile
Love is prohibited! Not accepted!”
Goodness! That feeling to know that you gave a person the very best of yourself, and they squandered it, left it by the side of the road. You’re saying it all here. I hurt for the woman of your poem. You make your readers ache!
