We believe the right to tell one’s story is a human right. The volunteer-based AWWP empowers oft-silenced Afghan women to share their voices with the world.
A few writers meet each other at the new Writers Hut in Kabul.
Issue 24
June & July 2011
Greetings!
Many Afghan women are denied freedoms we take for granted, including the fundamental right to tell one’s own story.
Through July 31, 2011, AWWP is running a campaign to support Project efforts to bring more voices of Afghan women to the world through their writing.
All donors will be entered in a drawing to win gifts from authors and artists from around the world. Any amount is welcome, but we suggest a minimum of $20 for this special campaign.
All proceeds go toward our Project activities, which include:
The AWWP Internet café and salon in Kabul
Our new Dari workshop and Pashto oral history project
Expanding AWWP in Herat
Ongoing mentoring and coaching in online workshops
And as always, please remember to comment on our website to encourage our brave writers, many who write in secret and some who walk miles to send us their work.
We don’t want to close the doors on education and knowledge, we don’t want to be locked in our houses, and we don’t want to see our country become a house of terror again. We are tired of terror, war and blood.
One evening we were getting ready for dinner when there was a knock at our door. Everybody was quiet and sad due to the recent conflict. Dad went to the door and did not return. He disappeared for two days. We did not even know where he was! We had some Pashtun neighbors who had good relations with the Taliban and I went to them crying and asking them to search for my dad. Although I was only a young girl, my neighbor listened to me.
A few hours later my neighbor informed us that my father was in one of the nearby Taliban stations.
The security situation can be difficult for many women in Afghanistan, especially those who are determined to further their education or those who frankly tell their stories. Out of concern for their safety, AWWP will not use family names or specific locators.
The right to tell one’s story is a human right.
With gratitude for sharing in our commitment to bring forward the voices and stories
