Freedom
I’m tired from the dance of colors in each face
I’m tired of looking backwards
through barred windows and shame
I’m tired from the dance of colors in each face
I’m tired of looking backwards
through barred windows and shame
Nilofar was born in Kabul and has lived in eastern Afghanistan since 2006. She is a medical college student.
I fear the return of the Taliban regime.
Those who would confine me like a jailed bird
in a dark, narrow prison by the name of Burqa.
How can I shout
when my mouth is closed, lest strangers hear me.
I want to color my life,
to make it pretty and beautiful,
the same as my ambitions.
No water can put out my flames
No soil can smother my voice
My nature is not hopeless
